Mirror Worlds as Large-Scale Outdoor Mixed Reality Enablers

The ubiquity of smart-phones makes them the de facto platform for outdoor mixed and augmented reality. While there has been a surge in sensor-based Augmented Reality applications, many unsolved technical challenges must be overcome before an ideal mobile AR client can be built. While solutions are being developed, we have investigated using 3D mirror world mixed reality clients as potential substitutes for AR interaction in the near term. In the long term we see the mirror world as a content creation tool for mixed reality, and as a complimentary UI modality for extending AR applications, allowing for interaction with remote locations. We discuss these cases with respect to Nokia City Scene, a mirror world Mixed Reality application we have built using NAVTEQ True data.
